In the language services industry, there is a lot of talk about how technology is transforming our work. It’s true: between the existing capabilities of machine translation, and the promise of AI tools to increase capacity, the horizon is bright.

However, what I often see missing from the conversation is the human element.

Human connection is the driver of our increasingly interconnected world. Advanced technology exists to fulfill this need. As the number of possible touchpoints enabled by technology grows, and more and more people adopt them, our opportunities for connection expand exponentially.

This fact spells good news for businesses in the language services industry. At the same time, language service businesses have to be very careful about our approach to growth. We need to stay in touch with our original purpose, and build it into the forefront of our products and solutions.

Hanna’s mission: empowering communication through language solutions

Hanna’s founding story is unique. As thousands of refugees poured into California in the 2000s, Jennifer Hanna, my mother, realized her purpose: transforming from a volunteer interpreter into a business owner. No job request was too small, no language too rare. While she drew on her extensive network of interpreters, I worked to build solutions to empower the linguists’ work. There were many late nights searching for the most qualified interpreters available, reviewing our quality assurance protocols, and launching our first technology tools to drive efficiency.

Fifteen years later, Hanna looks a lot different. We now proudly employ over 100 people and have developed a network of 10,000+ qualified linguists. Even with this remarkable growth, our almost-obsessive commitment to quality and the 99% fulfillment rate that built our business remain unchanged.

Hanna’s offices are always buzzing with activity. Sometimes, the team is placing calls to fill a rare language request, facilitating language assessments for a hospital network’s bilingual hires, and celebrating staff wins for their commitment to client satisfaction. On other days, they are filling interpretation and translation requests for a school district with a growing English learner (EL) population, building relationships with top-rated linguists, and localizing a website for Spanish-speaking communities. On top of all that, Hanna is also working on our platforms and tech-enabled solutions.

Later this year, we plan to announce an exciting new solution that will better serve how the world connects. Sourcing high-quality linguists to meet your unique requirements has always been our mission. Now, we’re striving to elevate the experience to a new level of convenience and precision, while ensuring your requirements, such as privacy, compliance, deadlines, quality, and professionalism, continue to be met, and easier than ever before.
